The novel is a literary genre. Often, the name alone on the book cover identifies the long form of the written narrative as an artistic and thus fictional work. In contrast to an epic, a novel creates the world from the perspective of the individual's experience, which can be fragile, incoherent or even chaotic, which would be unthinkable in an epic.
